Annual Farm Events
  Spring Fling
Early in the season, the farm hosts an open house for new and veteran members to tour the farm, meet Jay and the farm crew and get acquainted with each other.
  Mater Mania

Botanically speaking, it is really a fruit, and  because of its fleshy wall and seeds, technically, it’s a berry.   You may choose to reflect on that the next time you place a thick, juicy slice of a deep red, softball sized, vine-ripened ‘berry’ on your bread, and it extends over all four sides.

Farmer Jay Martin each year produces several varieties of tomato, including heirloom varieties, for the members of his CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) cooperative, and contributes fresh, ripe tomatoes to support the event.  Volunteers from the CSA support ‘Mater Mania, making such treats as fresh tomato sandwiches, salads, and fresh salsa for those who attend.
  Punkin' Pickin' Party
Punkin' Pickin" is a CSA event that occurs around the pumpkin harvest, where CSA families can come out and pick out their pumpkins leading up to Halloween and pumpkin pie season. It is a fun event featuring activities for the kids and fellowship with other CSA members.
  Gleaning and Pot Luck Dinner
Provident Organic Farm isn't just about delicious, organic produce. It's also about community. Members enjoy a final harvest pot luck at the farm in November each year.Glean´ing n. 1.The act of gathering after reapers; that which is collected by gleaning.
Gleaning and Pot Luck Dinner. CSA members gather at the end of the harvest season to share in a pot luck dinner featuring great seasonal vegetables followed by a final "gleaning" in the fields to gather in those vegetables that escaped the notice of the pickers. A fun time and members walk away with delicious fall vegetables. A great family activity and a way to acquaint children with the source of our food.

The final pot luck will be TBD.

If You Rake 'Em, I'll Take 'Em
Leaves make wonderful compost or they can be tilled into the garden in the fall to decompose over the winter.  They aerate the soil and make channels for the earthworms to work their wormy wonders.  If you rake leaves up in the fall and have no use for them, I will pick them up.  In the interest of fuel consumption and time, I may not be able to pick them all up.  Call me, let me know how much you have and when would be convenient to pick them up and I will figure out whether and when I can get there.
  Core CSA Group
Over the winter we will schedule several core group meetings.  I hope at least one representative from each distribution site will come and share ideas about how we can improve the CSA.  If you are interested in participating please let me know.  Please check back for dates, time and location.
  Converting to Biodiesel

One of the winter projects I am most looking forward to is converting to biodiesel.  Jack Pinion and I are researching that now.  We plan to build our own processor to make the fuel with used fryer oil.  Matt Steinman, a farmer in Pennsylvania, applied for and got a SARE (Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education) grant to build a processor and educate farmers in home brewing.  He built one on a trailer that he hauled all around the Mid-Atlantic area offering workshops this year.  I am hoping to get Matt here to do a workshop next year.  A processor can be built for about $1000.00 that will make 50 gallon batches at a cost of under $1.00 a gallon.

  Supporting Local Merchants
I know many of us like to buy locally are are constantly looking for local food supplies. I thought you would be excited by Patti Erickson's chocolate truffle business. Pattie, a long-time CSA member and coordinator of the Medora Harvest Fund, makes amazing, heavenly chocolate truffles.  She has started her own business right here in the cross roads of Delmarva!  You may contact her at (443) 235-8211, email or visit her site www.pattishandmadechocolates.com.

Love coffee but don't want to patronize a huge corporation and perfer Organic and Fair Trade Coffee?  A couple of graduates from SU opened RISE UP, a little coffer shop tht serves only organic and only fair trade coffee.  On top of that it's the bust cup of coffie in town.
