Medora Harvest Fund

c

The benefits of healthy, safe food should be available to all, not just the financially able.  To insure that all community members who desire fresh, organic vegetables have access to the bounty of Provident Organic Farm, we have initiated a charitable fund.  Donations from CSA, community, and local business members supportive of our efforts allow Provident Organic Farm to give vegetable shares to those who could not otherwise afford to purchase them.

The charity is named the Medora Harvest Fund to honor the memory of Medora Cockey, the late daughter of Salisbury’s Jim and Cathy Cockey.  Medora’s life was tragically cut short in 2004 when she died of autoimmune hepatitis at the age of 23. Medora was an ardent supporter of organic farming.  While in college she had worked several summers on organic farms in Virginia and in Georgia, as well as at Provident Organic Farm in Bivalve, Maryland.  Although hard and dirty work in hot weather for low pay, Medora thought it was wonderful.  She, like many idealistic young people, found great meaning in growing fresh, organic produce for local markets.

As her involvement in organic farming increased, so did her awareness of the dangers posed by conventional agricultural methods to the food supply and the environment, which furthered her commitment to organic farming’s stewardship of the land.  Medora enthusiastically supported Provident Organic Farm owner Jay Martin’s efforts with the farm and the CSA since such ventures represent a healthier and morally responsible way of producing food.  Medora’s family is grateful to have the Medora Harvest Fund honor her commitment to organic farming and urges the community to support it in her memory.

The Medora Harvest Fund is managed by the Lower Eastern Shore Sustainable Organic Network (LESSON), a local non-profit organization that promotes outreach and education about the benefits of organic farming.  LESSON is a non-profit 501(3)c organization, so all donations made to the Medora Harvest Fund are fully tax deductible.

In 2004, we purchased five vegetable shares for families in need. Last year, we were able to provide 11 local families with shares of Provident Organic Farm’s bountiful harvest.  This year our goal is to reach at least as many families again through the Medora Harvest Fund.  We welcome your contribution. To make a tax-deductible donation, simply make a check out to the Medora Harvest Fund and send it to:
